Sharon Johal 2018 Derby Day - Julie Goodwin Couture Melbourne couturier

The Melbourne Cup Carnival has always been a busy week for me, but this year, the stakes were raised. I am a lover of all things black, white and monochrome, so Derby Day is a great excuse to kick off the Cup week in my own couture, dress the women who inspire me, and enjoy a few well-earned champagnes of course.

I may be a little biased, but Sharon Johal and Phoebe Montague were two of the best-dressed women on Derby Day, and each of these outfits spoke of the women who wore them.

Sharon is more commonly known for her role as Dipi Rebecchi on Neighbours, but I admire her most for her drive; she’s a former lawyer and the first actor of Indian origin to score a key role on a mainstream Australian TV drama. Meggy Smith put her spin on my tailored tuxedo jacket and full tulle skirt, styling it with classic millinery and delicate accessories.

Phoebe Montague went for high volume and high drama, styling my bespoke couture dress with a hand-beaded bow and pom-pom stilettos. Phoebe and I worked closely on this spotted flocked tulle dress and it was months in the making. Each hand-sewn button and pleat detail was a testament to my love of slow, considered fashion, and our love of a statement sleeve!

Two beautiful women, two JGC outfits, one big Derby Day, and I’m not finished yet… The rest of Cup week has a few surprises in store. Stay tuned.
