Here’s what I’ve learnt in a year of fashion

2018 has been a big year for me.

I’ve dressed incredible women, I’ve been to more events than I can count (and enjoyed my fair share of event bubbles too), I made it through the biggest race week of the year, and I’ve sewn thousands upon thousands of stitches. I’ve loved every minute of 2018, and for Julie Goodwin Couture, it’s been a big one.

With every year of being a couturier comes another year of fashion lessons, learnings and experience. I believe it’s important to reflect every now and again, to look back and appreciate the triumphs and look forward to plan the changes.

Looking back on 2018, I’ve worked out my own ‘three simple truths’.

  1. Doing what you love is sometimes the hard road – but it’s worth it.
  2. Working with good people makes the ordinary extraordinary, and the extraordinary out of this world!
  3. Learn what you’re good at, then do it better.

I’ve always been passionate about making women feel great in their wardrobes, but this year has pushed me into new shapes and silhouettes, for all kinds of women. When it comes to curves, I’ve always known that confidence is key; this year has reaffirmed the important role that the perfect fit plays in that. There is nothing like helping a woman to feel like the best version of herself.

Most importantly, I’ve grown to understand and value my role in the industry. Slow fashion is the only way for me, and I am committed to making a positive impact through design. Women deserve to feel great in their clothes, and I am thrilled to be able to have a hand in making that happen – beautifully and sustainably.

After 20 years as a woman making clothes for women, I can say I have never been so glad I made the decision to travel this road.

Here’s to another incredible year of couture, and an exciting year ahead!

I don’t do alterations, but they are central to my philosophy, and here’s a pile I did last week.
