Building a better wardrobe for your best year yet

by Julie Goodwin, / Tuesday January 22nd 2019

A few key pieces.

Those who know me well know I have a few key pieces in my own wardrobe that I wear again and again. Fashion isn’t like it used to be; wearing the same outfit twice is actually a good thing nowadays – and it’s a sustainable way to dress too.

Sometimes I’ll buy something new off the rack, but it’s rare, and sometimes I’ll buy second-hand, but most of what I own, I’ve made myself because I love wearing clothes that fit properly.

The capsule wardrobe.

I have a few great high-rotation staples that I cherish, and I believe every woman should own a small capsule wardrobe of special pieces too. A little black dress is a must, and mine is one that I wear to events, cocktail parties, even layered in winter if I’m going out to dinner.

I also own a timeless neutral trench; no matter how my body changes, what colour is ‘in’, what’s underneath or what mood I’m in, it just seems to go with whatever I wear and it’s a true treasure. A tailored white shirt is also a reliable go-to, and I pair mine with black pants for corporate functions, or when I’m feeling adventurous, a high-waisted box-pleat skirt, heels and some jewels for the races.

I’ve made them all too, because I know what it’s like to stand in a changeroom and struggle to find something that actually fits. I’m not just talking, ‘this will do’, or ‘this will fit in summer when I lose this winter weight’, I am talking truly, beautifully, to-the-millimeter-fits and feels amazing, every time you put it on.

That’s the magic of couture.

When you step into something that’s been made for your beautiful body, your curves, your shape, your height, your arms, your waist – and yours alone – it shows, and there’s nothing quite like that feeling.
